Help For Choosing The Rings For Your Marriage
Throughout history, rings have represented engagement and marriage. The first ones were sometimes not even metal, as in certain civilizations were reeds or grasses were woven to denote betrothal. These lasted for the brief engagement period and were replaced at the time of marriage, normally with an iron ring. Eventually, gold or silver took the place of the iron, and as more time passed, precious gems began to be used. Diamonds were not often used, however, because their scarcity put the place beyond reach of most people not occupying a throne. When bountiful diamond mines were discovered during the nineteenth century, the increased supply lowered the cost, despite the controls enacted by diamond miners.
Antique engagement rings sometimes reflect cost and rarity of diamonds. Sapphires, amethysts, and rubies were often used instead. Settings, however, were often very ornate, and jewelers mastered the technique of creating rings with delicate, intricate filigree. An antique can be a half century old or a half a millennium old, so there will be a great variance in styles and the gemstones used. As such, there is no true 'standard' antique ring.
Many brides consider the diamond cut as a major factor in the selection. Most of the traditional cuts have flat tops. The current overwhelming favorite is the round cut. These are often found in solitaires. The faceted sides add to the brilliance of even smaller stones as they reflect the light better. Princess cut engagement rings have a square shape which can be mounted flush with the metal bound. However, this style is frequently used for a solitaire as well, with the mounting prongs placed to cover the corners.
Whenever possible, try on both the engagement and wedding rings together or purchase as a set. Mismatched rings can sometimes become tangled or scratch each other. Jewelry designers solve this problem by creating sets that are meant to be worn together. They have also designed interlocking sets that may be joined be swirls in each band.
At some point in your marriage, you might choose to replace your wedding band, engagement ring, or both with an eternity ring. These are bands with diamonds or other gems set flush in the metal. The gems often circle the entire band, although there are also styles that only have stones on half of the band. Diamonds are commonly used, but they are sometimes alternated with other gems, such as the birthstones of the children. These rings are often purchased to mark a milestone in the marriage, which may be a silver anniversary or any other special occasion. If the styles are compatible, all three rings can be worn together.
Proper fit is essential when purchasing a ring, especially one you plan to wear constantly for many years. A metal band can be sized to make sure it will be comfortable. This service is typically included in the purchase price of the ring, but is not expensive if you have heirloom rings you wish to wear. Rings that have gems set all around the band, such as an eternity style, can usually not be sized. Stones would have to be removed for sizing, which can negatively impact the looks of the ring.
Think about how you will wear your engagement ring before purchasing one. A ring that is too ornate or overly large can prove annoying as you go about your day. Constantly removing it can lead to its loss, so these work best for special occasions. If you want a ring you can wear day and night, you will probably be happier with a simpler style
