What is your favorite fantasy book/ fantasy Author?
Yes, I'm a bit of a nerd. I like fantasy books. My favorite author is R.A. Salvatore and my favorite books are the Dragonlance Chronicles. What do yall like?
I'm LOVE what JK Rowling did for children's fantasy and for fantasy in general. She made it much more mainstream, which means better sales and more and better books.
I took me a while to remember who Terry Pratchet is. I tried to read his stuff once, his humor was a little too dry for my taste... I got bored.
I read Eragon and Eldest and am impatiently waiting for the final installment of the trilogy (summer 2008). I will look into those other books, however. Thanks for the tip!
I have a huge collection of over 300 fantasy books and my favorite author/series are...
1. Marion Zimmer Bradley-avalon/firebrand, Trillium/Brightly Burning (with other authors),
2. Terry Goodkind-Sword of truth
3. Mercedes Lackey- Valedmar/bardic/elvenbane (other authors)
4. Terry Brooks-Shannara
5. Lawrence Watt Evans-Esthar- Spell of the Black Dagger is awesome
6. Robert Jordan-Wheel of time- Sometimes I think the series is a little winded
7. Melanie Rawn-Ruins of Ambrai-she recently put out a real world magic book that was lame though
8. Sharon Shinn- Everything so far, but the books have very similar plots!
9. Anne Bishop-Black Jewels
Random others that are ok- Maggie Furey, Kate Forseyth, Julian May, Andre Norton, CJ Cherryh, Terry Pratchett, Jacqueline Carey, Tamora Pierce, Tanith Lee
I've been reading fantasy for so long that a lot of plots and stories that were so awesome now seem a bit generic (Tolkien I know it was the first but...). For example, a lot of historical fantasy were some druid does whatever in celtic times almost makes me want to put it down immediatly (Julian Mariller). Or an author who spends all their time describing a magical world with no character development and no realistic human charcteristics (L.E. Modeist). That's not to say I haven't read or dislike them but they have to consistently have
1. an interesting world (Robert Jordan)
2. interesting characters (Mercedes Lackey)
3. New/Creative or Purposeful perspective (Terry Goodkind, MZB)
4. Good Writing (Guy Gavriel Kay, Charles de Lint)
5. Sometimes for me...darker themes (Anne Bishop, Jaqueline Carey)
6. Sometimes...a little realism to the characters and world
Elves being superbeing all the time gets really boring
(Lawrence Watt Evans is really good at this, although not the best at all the other criteria)
There are many more but I can't think of them all right now, Salvatore is good but I only read one book so far, and I'm holding out for the next book to give an opinion.
